The Joy of Shoulder Season at Fox Harb’r

Most of us do our vacationing in the summer. And why not? That’s when the weather is warm and sunny. That’s when the kids are out of school. That’s when companies expect people to book vacation time. So that’s when most of us take vacation time. But here’s a little secret: vacationing when everyone else isn’t can be so much better.

But Wait, What’s Shoulder Season?

Shoulder season is the time of year where a tourist destination is open but doesn’t attract full capacity. At Fox Harb’r, the shoulder season happens in early spring and late fall. Basically, mid-April to mid-May and mid-October to mid November.

So What Are the Benefits of Shoulder Season?

The best thing about shoulder season vacationing: it’s less busy because there are fewer people around. If you want a vacation that’s more relaxed or with a more romantic environment, shoulder season is the time to come here. After all, sitting by the fireplace with that special someone is nicest when there’s a bit of crisp in the air. And of course, fall is the time to come if you want to see the leaves change colour.

Another fantastic thing about shoulder season vacationing is you can expect more value-driven rates. At Fox Harb’r, rates are around 30% less. In addition to great rates, there are regular special packages and deals. For example, you could get a fourth night free.

Another thing people don’t always think of is the seasonality of food. Nova Scotia is blessed with an abundance of seafood and many small, local producers of things such as asparagus, rhubarb, apples, kohlrabi, and so much more. Many foods are best in season and that’s why we run special seasonal menus to highlight food at its best. Visit in the spring and you’ll find the best-tasting asparagus on our menu. Visit in the fall, and you’ll sample some of the most incredible apple creations. And who can forget fiddlehead season? If you want to partake, you’ll have to visit in the shoulder season.

Special Events Don’t Stop Because It’s Shoulder Season

There’s always a culinary weekend to look forward to. For example, from November 1-3 2024 we’re hosting Chef Alex Chen for a delicious cooking demonstration and an exquisite gala dinner featuring a 5-course tasting menu.

Another thing that’s always happening during shoulder season: great concerts. For example, this year we’re hosting Lennie Gallant with The Innkeeper’s Christmas Concert, a festive evening of original holiday music, personal stories, and a seasonal buffet—an enchanting start to the holiday season.

Adding to our lineup of musical events, Bruce Guthro’s Songwriters’ Circle on November 8th will showcase Jodi Guthro and a special group of artists. The evening includes a gourmet BBQ buffet by Executive Chef Jeff McInnis and a dynamic session of live music and stories.

On top of that, there are always spa specials, romantic retreats, and other packages and deals that make vacationing in the shoulder season that much sweeter.
